ARM Expects Apple’s iPad To Face Over 50 Competitors Globally This Very Year [Tablets]

ARM is a company that is in a very good position to know and guess exactly how many tablet devices are coming out globally. Since most of these devices use ARM-designed low-power, high performance chips, it is easy for ARM to keep a track of these things. Even Apple’s iPad uses what is suspected to be a modified ARM Cortex A8/A9 chip (we are actually quite sure about it being an ARM chip, we’re just waiting for the tear down reports). So ARM has spilled the beans — it expects over 50 different tablet devices to come out globally by the end of this year.

HTC’s Legend has got to be the most coveted Android phone ever since it was first shown off at the MWC 2010 event. It’s premium aluminum unibody build, the rich AMOLED display, the premium finish — everything makes you want it, bad. Those lusting after it in the US will have to wait a while loger before they get any specific dates but their UK counterparts have already received their release date — 23rd March.

Here’s another example of malware slipping into tightly controlled places — an HTC Magic unit sold by Vodafone was found to be infected with really serious malware. This was discovered after the user plugged the phone into her PC and her Panda Cloud AV went off, detecting multiple instances of active malware on the device. The story takes a turns for the ‘intriguing’ when it is revealed that the buyer/user in question is actually a Panda Cloud Employee.

Android 2.1 For Droid Gets Leaked, Works Fine Apparently [Android]

March 7 2010 Categorized Under: Cell Phones Tags; , , , , 2 Commented

This has already happened once before but back then the build was hardly final and it wasn’t available for a full download. This time, a near complete build of the Android 2.1 OS for the Droid Eris seems to be up for grabs courtesy of the fine folks at XDA developers. I say near complete because if it were complete, we would get it officially. However, My guess is that they will push it within this month.

Real Robots Powered By Android — The End Is Nigh! [Android]

Okay, so I am only joking about the end part (or am I?) but the real robots part is, well — real! There’s a post on FrAndroid that shows a couple of Google engineers making real robots that have Android phones as their brains! Skynet had T-1, we have the G-1 to be scared of. Thankfully, this don’t do much. Yet.

HiVision Has A Really Low Power And Really Cheap Android Tablet [Tablets]

March 1 2010 Categorized Under: Tablets Tags; , , , , , , , No Commented

HiVision is a Chinese company that has a strange tendency — they usually never offer their products outside China but they often turn up at international trade shows and show off really cheap versions of the latest computer trends. So it should come as no surprise to anyone reading this that they have a really cheap tablet on display at CeBit this year.

Dell Mini 5 One Of Multiple Tablets From Dell? [Tablets]

Dell is apparently making more tablets. I cannot think of a situation where that will be productive or useful but it is important news nonetheless, so I’ma let you have it.

So we’ve all been hearing about the Dell Mini 5 right? Yeah, it is that MID that is caught in between being to big to be a phone and too damn small to be a proper modern tablet. It is just Dell’s feel good device — we made one! And now it is about to get siblings. Yay?

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Release Date Set For April On Vodafone UK, Rest Is Unknown [Smartphones]

February 4 2010 Categorized Under: Cell Phones Tags; , , , , , , one Commented

Sony Ericsson’s first step into the Android world and it is a pretty well hyped one. Everyone’s expecting a lot of things from the device and it is one of my personal favorites amongst the upcoming Android device. When it was first released back in November last year, it did see a lot of excitement and hype around it. The main thing going for it is the custom UI and two new apps that will be exclusive on the XPERIA X10 – MediaScape and TimeScape.

Maemo Graced With FireFox Mobile, At Long Last

February 1 2010 Categorized Under: Cell Phones Tags; , , , , , , , one Commented

This is good news for both Maemo enthusiasts and Nokia (and I guess the N900 owners too). Mozila has been developing a mobile version of their popular FireFox Internet Browser for quite some time now. Last week, they finally released the final version of this browser, which has so far been known by its code name Fennec (a kind of small Fox, get the pun?). This version is supported on some of the Nokia smartphone devices, including the N900.

Looks Like Pre, Smells Like Android, Reads Alcatel [Smartphones] [Video]

February 1 2010 Categorized Under: Cell Phones Tags; , , , , , , 2 Commented

Now this could be a little confusing for those with a short attention span but please bear with me through the next description. So some folks over at Alacatel were brainstorming for a new smartphone. A lot of curses flew to Apple, HTC, Motorola, etc. for stealing all the ideas. Then someone realized that the Palm Pre was fading from public memory, so why not make one like that? I am sure they will forget about the strange sense of deja vu when they see that it runs Android and not the Web OS. Besides, it’s not like they are going to make it look good or anything. And they should also add some sorely missed buttons while they are at it. And tada! The Alcatel OT980 was born!
