Verizon has recently become exceedingly bad at keeping things under a wrap. With the Droid 2 leaking left and right, there’s no doubt that the phone is coming really soon. The Droid 2 has been leaking really badly of late and not it is time for something new — a mobile WiFi hotspot that supports both CDMA and GSM networks. Moreover, there seems to be a 4G LTE SIM card out in the wild. More on the other side.

Motorola Droid X has been on the radar for tech industry sky watchers for a long time now. It has been a secret so badly kept that we actually knew everything about it way before it was released. We even had hands-on videos of it before it became officially available for such things. Nevertheless, it is finally official and is here for everyone to bask in its newfound speed and extra-large display size. Not to mention quite a few other great features. Motorola seems to be on the right track with the whole Droid series, even though the ‘Droid Does’ campaign is getting a bit tired. Some campaigns are just not meant to run for three successive generations of a product. So excluding that, I’d say the new Droid is going to be a tough player in the higher echelons of the smartphone market.

Ever since the first iPhone was launched and the AT&T exclusivity deal was struck in the US in 2007, people have wanted to know the details of this confidential contract. As it turns out, the secret is out and the duration seems to be an astounding five years. This claim is supported by old court documents related with the contract. But if that is true, then all the rumors about the Verizon CDMA iPhone coming this fall must be false. And there’s another bind to this — Apple seems to have submitted a brief in 2008 that cites an USA Today article from March 23 2008 which also says that Apple has a 5-year contract.

Earlier this month, Spring notified all its customers that it is still working on bringing the Android 2.1 upgrade to its Android devices, which are the HTC Hero and the Samsung Moment. Although it isn’t as if they have overshot their projected time frame already, the notification hinted at delays in the roll out. It talks of issues that apparently were expected to be resolved sooner than this but still persist.

It seems that Verizon wireless will not keep any stone unturned to outshine Apple’s formidable iPhone and emerge the winner in the high end smart phone battle. After unleashing an unprecedented iPhone bashing campaign with its whacky ‘Droid Does’ ad, Verizon is readying another device to augment android invasion in the cell phone market. While the Motorola Droid is being touted as the potential iPhone killer, Verizon is keen to offer the buyers with a tight budget another choice. That explains why it is going to launch the HTC Droid Eris almost simultaneously with the Motorola Droid.

It is Saturday again, time for the weekend mood to set in and to help you along the way we have this freshly baked Apple round-up just for you. Apple has had a great week. Things went uphill from the very start when they reported their (through the roof) Q3 earnings and then we had the roster of new Macs to savour.
The rest of the week has been pretty small compared to those two things but they have been large enough to carry us through the entire week. And make no mistakes, we will still be hearing about the new Macs two weeks down the line and may be more.
Get to the other side for your piece of this delicious pie.

Here at Otaku Gadgets, we are pretty grateful about the new trend in cell phones. With the iPhone and Android fighting it out and the others squatting on the sidelines, you have to admit that this is an interesting time to be using and buying cell phones in. However, in the face of all that improvement in the mobile OS arena, Microsoft is still lagging behind. If Steve Ballmer can publicly wish that they could skip 6.5 and go straight on to Windows Mobile 7, I think I am justified in saying that we feel something similar.
But that is only a passing thought before we dive in to the madness of it all. BlackBerry is struggling to catch up it seems and Palm is probably resting after the Pre and App Catalogue updates. Get to the other side for this week’s round up.
