Samsung has finally launched the Bada mobile OS and the first ever phone to run on it at the Mobile World Congress happening at Barcelona, Spain right now. The phone is called Wave, just as the rumors said it was. Officially it is the Wave S8500 — the first phone to have the Bada OS. As a piece of a hardware, it is easy to see that it is pretty good. But when it comes to the OS, opinions don’t seem to differ much amongst the attendees. The general vibe is ‘meh’ and worse. But that doesn’t mean that the phone does not have potential. Anything that has that great a screen is bound to have some potential!

Google has been running completely rampant all over the tech industry of late. In their quest to bring everything you do on your computer online, they have released their latest creation – the Chrome OS. It is still in development but it is really amazing what they have done so far. And in the middle of all this, it is easy to momentarily forget about the lovable green robot – the Android.
If Chrome OS is the future of netbooks, smartbooks and then desktops, then Android is definitely the future of all but few smartphones. The Chrome OS might fail to deliver but Android has already taken a strong hold over the smartphone market in general and over the tech community to be specific. Everyone who understands what the Android is, sees limitless potential for innovative handheld devices. This is the only current platform that can fully compete with the sophistication of the iPhone – the phone that started it all. And it is an open platform, which means anyone can taker it up and innovate over it.

The last week has been quite exciting for the techies in Japan. The annual gadget extravaganza, CEATEC Japan, had some pretty mind-boggling stuff and the usual futuristic concepts that you would expect at such an event. Even though the gadgets that drew the most attention were mostly prototypes, they still generated enough buzz for the tech world to turn their short attention span to them for longer than usual.
So here’s a special CEATEC version of Catch Up Monday for you. Get to the other side to catch up on the latest in tech.

There was a time, not too long ago, when smartphones meant bulky phones with QWERTY keypads, clumsy UI, limited features and sky-high price tags. Not much has changed on the price tag side but the bulk is considerably lower now and the various UIs on the market are going from great to greater. Plus the features have pretty much hit the other side of limited in this category. So I thought it right to start a weekly section that cuts through all the noise and brings you the main stories that you need to hear.
