Exercise In Futility: Full OS X Running On Nokia’s N900, Eventually [On Video]

February 1 2010 Categorized Under: Cell Phones, Entertainment, Misc Tags; , , , , , , , 2 Commented

This is a project about a man trying and succeeding in his attempt to run the OS X 10.3 version on Nokia’s latest flasgship smartphone device — the N900. Someone should tell people like this that some things are better left alone even if they are possible practically. It is technically possible to each a chocolate chip cookie with hot mustard and cough syrup, doesn’t mean I will do it. Then again, some companies seem to share this philosophy when making new products — because it is possible to make a laptop that is powered by a 300MHz and runs on a semblance of an OS.

However, this was a personal project and seems like the guy had fun, so hats off to his patience. This is the first ever documented attempt and a successful one at that, to boot a full OS X off a smartphone. But if you really want to test your patience, why don’t you try networking Windows Vista with FreeBSD? Or watch a tortoise complete a 100 meter dash? It does make for a fun time lapse video though… of the franken-thing booting up. Yes, it needs heavy editing to show the thing booting up within a tolerable time frame. Know why? ‘Cause it takes 2 whole hours to boot up!

Enjoy the video on the other side.

Nokia N900 Maemo Phone Finally Gets Slice Of Ovi Store

January 13 2010 Categorized Under: Cell Phones Tags; , , , , , No Commented

The Nokia N900 is Nokia’s answer to the whole new-age smartphone trend that has completely changed the way we look at smartphones. This is of course thanks to Apple and their iPhone but instead of using iPhone number one rival Android or their all time favorite Symbian, Nokia chose to go to another mobile Linux OS called Maemo. So the N900 runs Maemo5 and has nifty features that look really cool. But as everyone knows by now — its not the platform or the hardware that makes or breaks today’s smartphones. It is the third-party ecosystem that really decides the fates of such devices. The N900 has been lagging behind in that exact area until now.

You might not have noticed this yet but we have become extremely dependant on our mobile phones. This is especially true for those who use modern smartphones. Our always-connected lives would become highly disconnected if we were forced to live without these devices for a single day.

Our dependence comes through very clearly when we are trying to buy a new phone. Suddenly, all our daily needs and requirements come into play and we are left puzzled at the onslaught of features. This scenario is further complicated by the fact that most companies have product release cycles that are between 10 months to a year.

The companies cannot be stopped from bringing out the latest gear all throughout the year but we can help you catch up on the latest phone news. And so we do, every Thursday. Get over to the other side for this week’s digest.

Nokia On a Roll: The Booklet 3G, The N900 and The X6

September 9 2009 Categorized Under: Cell Phones, Entertainment, netbooks Tags; , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , one Commented

nokia's been taking its motto of Connecting People very seriously lately. New devices are choc-a-bloc with connectivity optionsWith the Nokia World ’09 and the IFA ’09, we have been treated to quite a few nice hefty pieces of gadget goodness. Out of that goodness comes the Booklet 3G, the N900 and the X6. Forget the X3 because it really is very forgettable. It is the poor cousin of the X6, which is where the true money lies.

The Booklet 3G is not a new development. It was declared back in the last week of August and this time round the only new thing about it are the specifications. The N900 was also known to be coming ever since it was officially announced at the end of August and the rumors and spy shots preceded the announcement as usual. Thus, technically the X6 is the newest piece of news of the lot. This round up is meant to bring you up to date on these three things from Nokia. Jump to the other side for videos, specifications and more.
