The Netbook Conspiracy

Asus probably did not have an inkling as to how much their new line of products will affect the industry when they introduced the netbook. Rather, they reintroduced it. The concept was already there and earlier attempts had been made at it. But when Asus introduced it, the time was just right. The technology for it was just emerging and soon it became apparent that the Atom will rule this new segment in the market – netbooks.

Netbooks marked a decisive shift in the market in quite a few significant ways. First of all, computer makers actually started working on smaller and cheaper models instead of bigger and more expensive ones. Besides, the recession had already started making its presence felt, so models like these really made sense. And the greatest impact was where it mattered the most – on the consumers.

Welcome to another edition of Netbooks Wednesday, your weekly round up of the latest in netbooks. Rounding them up has been getting harder recently because the netbook segment is currently going through a bit of an identity crisis with the launch of the CULV powered ultra-portable computers. These 11inch models with ultra low voltage processors are neither netbook nor notebook proper. Anyway, if you see some of them in the round up, you will know why. Get to the other side and enjoy.

Sure things are trickling down to the West after the Asian markets have had their fill but if you want to see netbooks that will never see the other side of the GMT, you have to head east.

Having exhausted all possible combinations of Intel Atom and the usual features found in netbooks, the companies are now keen on experimenting with things like in-built 3G, GPS, etc. Take the Nokia Booklet 3G as an example or look at what Kohjinsha is doing. Jump over to the other side for the entire round up.

Nettop Round Up: NVIDIA Ion (Finally) Showing Its Strength

Nettops are to desktops what netbooks are to notebooks. Thankfully, there is no chicken and egg story here. It can definitely be said that netbooks came before nettops. Of course, their equivalents have existed much before these modern iterations, so historical firsts are still a mystery.

Nettops are useful in many ways and in my opinion they are more useful at the average home than the netbook on the average lap. That’s because I will take a smartphone if I want the internet and will take my 13inch MacBook to get work done. And ever since NVIDIA’s Ion came to the market, they have been able to playback HD movies and also play a game or two. Ion consumes a bit more power than Intel’s Atom chipset but it is marginally more at about 10 watts extra at peak load.

Hence the Ion has been seeing a lot of action in the nettop scene. It’s especially good for those who want to make HTPCs on the cheap.

Get to the other side for a round up of five new nettops that you should know about if you are planning to buy a new home desktop on a budget and cut down on your electricity bills at the same time.
