You might not have noticed this yet but we have become extremely dependant on our mobile phones. This is especially true for those who use modern smartphones. Our always-connected lives would become highly disconnected if we were forced to live without these devices for a single day.

Our dependence comes through very clearly when we are trying to buy a new phone. Suddenly, all our daily needs and requirements come into play and we are left puzzled at the onslaught of features. This scenario is further complicated by the fact that most companies have product release cycles that are between 10 months to a year.

The companies cannot be stopped from bringing out the latest gear all throughout the year but we can help you catch up on the latest phone news. And so we do, every Thursday. Get over to the other side for this week’s digest.

companies assorted

Welcome to another edition of Netbooks Wednesday, your weekly round up of the latest in netbooks. Rounding them up has been getting harder recently because the netbook segment is currently going through a bit of an identity crisis with the launch of the CULV powered ultra-portable computers. These 11inch models with ultra low voltage processors are neither netbook nor notebook proper. Anyway, if you see some of them in the round up, you will know why. Get to the other side and enjoy.

The last week has been quite exciting for the techies in Japan. The annual gadget extravaganza, CEATEC Japan, had some pretty mind-boggling stuff and the usual futuristic concepts that you would expect at such an event. Even though the gadgets that drew the most attention were mostly prototypes, they still generated enough buzz for the tech world to turn their short attention span to them for longer than usual.

So here’s a special CEATEC version of Catch Up Monday for you. Get to the other side to catch up on the latest in tech.

There was a time, not too long ago, when smartphones meant bulky phones with QWERTY keypads, clumsy UI, limited features and sky-high price tags. Not much has changed on the price tag side but the bulk is considerably lower now and the various UIs on the market are going from great to greater. Plus the features have pretty much hit the other side of limited in this category. So I thought it right to start a weekly section that cuts through all the noise and brings you the main stories that you need to hear.

Fujitsu LifeBook T5010 Review: A Multitouch Tablet

fujitsu-t5010

Tablets have been around for a long time and they have always been a niche product. The mass market has no use for a convertible tablet simply because not everyone needs to scribble and draw all the time. Tablets are meant for designers, artists, architects and anyone who benefits from having a digital notebook to draw and scribble on.

This new tablet from Fujitsu is quite different from your usual tablet. It does have the keyboard and the rotating screen that can be folded away but the touchscreen now also supports multiple inputs i.e. multitouch. It actually has two different modes on the same screen. If you use the pen, it activates the Wacom digitized panel. If you use your finger(s), it activates a capacitive touchscreen that is similar to the one on the iPhone.

Now that is what really makes this product interesting. These added features increase the ways in which you can interact with the device. Get over to other side for the meat.

The World is Going Multitouch: 6 Multitouch Products That are NOT Mobile Phones

Now use more fingers! [photo by nyki_m via Flickr, CC license, click for source]As is pretty obvious from all the handheld devices around us, the world is going for multitouch big time now. Any new smartphone that does not have a multitouch screen is being laughed at and mocked (sorry E72). So it was really only a matter of time before other devices started going multitouch. The latest devices to go multitouch are actually pretty diverse. You have a new display from Packard Bell along with new all-in-one PCs from them, a new tablet (not PC) from Wacom and portables from Lenovo and Fujitsu.

So it is official people, the world is going multitouch. After all, I’d much rather use something I can really touch than something I have to virtually poke at with my mouse. I have already covered Asus making a touchscreen netbook and a keyboard PC with a touchscreen. So the lower end of the market is getting some love from Asus. Hop over to the other side for more on these 4 devices.
