Like I have been saying for quite some time now, the age of the tablet is definitely upon us. There is no doubting the fact that every company that has ever made a portable computing device is thinking about making a tablet. In fact, companies with no experience at all in such things are stepping in. Not to mention all the startups with their own tiny ideas about what a tablet should be like. I say tiny because they lack the vision (and the funding) to do something really extraordinary. It takes visionaries to build entire markets out of nowhere.
One such visionary has definitely been Google. As an entity, it has really done a lot of things differently and has shown the world that an ethos built around simplicity and minimalism can really make a lot of business sense. But when the search engine giant started to diversify into hardware, it really was something to take a look at. They are still getting there actually, as they are expected to release the first ever Google branded hardware tomorrow (the 5th) at the Android conference at Mountain View. Yes, I am talking about the Nexus One. But I am more excited about another piece of news that has not attracted as much attention as it probably should’ve.

If you have been keeping an eye on the news, you will see that the netbook world is currently full of mainly two things – Android and Chrome OS. Google has officially taken over the high portability, low performance segment and made it into a stripped down wonderland of speedy booting goodness. That is of course the Chrome OS. The Android just makes for a great experience as a whole on something that is too small ‘full’ OS’ but large enough to be out of sync with smartphones.

If there is one thing that Google is showing propensity for, it is attempting to redefine technology as we know it. With the release of the Chrome OS (developer binaries), they have at least shown that they have the vision to change the way we look at something so very basic and core as the operating system that runs on our computers.
With Chrome OS, they are attempting to create a sea change in the way we interact with our portable computers. Starting with the netbooks, they are aiming at making the world work solely via the Internet. That means cloud computing – something that Google is getting increasingly good at.

Netbooks have become pretty much ubiquitous these days and you don’t need me to tell you that. However, some of you might be pleasantly surprised when I tell you that you do not have to be stuck with Windows XP or a stripped down Vista or even Windows 7 Starter Edition to get your netbook a running. Sure you have those instant-booting OS’ but they don’t do much do they? There are quite a few great OS’ out there that have been coded especially for netbooks.
These are usually more focused on letting you do what people usually do on netbooks – surf the net, browse local media files and images and do some social networking online. The approach each such OS takes to each of these things is different but at the end, in some ways they are far better than conventional OS’ for your netbooks. That’s because these OS’ have been built from ground up with the netbooks’ requirements, capabilities and limitations in mind. Get to the other side for introductions to some of the more popular netbook OS’.

Here at Otaku Gadgets, we are pretty grateful about the new trend in cell phones. With the iPhone and Android fighting it out and the others squatting on the sidelines, you have to admit that this is an interesting time to be using and buying cell phones in. However, in the face of all that improvement in the mobile OS arena, Microsoft is still lagging behind. If Steve Ballmer can publicly wish that they could skip 6.5 and go straight on to Windows Mobile 7, I think I am justified in saying that we feel something similar.
But that is only a passing thought before we dive in to the madness of it all. BlackBerry is struggling to catch up it seems and Palm is probably resting after the Pre and App Catalogue updates. Get to the other side for this week’s round up.
