With the Apple event just six days away, more rumors were bound to crop up. And we we get closer, the rumors are likely to get more and more specific and hit things with greater accuracy. Apple is about to announce something major on Wednesday next week. It will be their “latest creation”. It will be something we have never seen before. And well all know by now that it is going to be the long rumored slate/tablet device from Apple. We don’t know too much about it. It is has been as well kept a secret as the Nexus One has been a badly kept one. But above all the questions about how powerful it is, what the UI is, lies the basic question — what the hell does it look like?

There’s a report by TG Daily that suggests that Apple’s appetite for 10inch LCD screens has been sucking the Asian market dry of such units. According to the report, a designer for a firm said that they have been designing a tablet but it has been impossible for them to source 10inch LCD screens from the Asian manufacturers because Apple has pre-ordered them all. The designer who said all this wished to remain annonymous, which of course always adds to the mystery and takes away from the credibility of the rumor. But that is the way the bouncing ball bounces, especially on a top secret project like the Apple Tablet/iSlate. And there’s more in this rumor.

Like I have been saying for quite some time now, the age of the tablet is definitely upon us. There is no doubting the fact that every company that has ever made a portable computing device is thinking about making a tablet. In fact, companies with no experience at all in such things are stepping in. Not to mention all the startups with their own tiny ideas about what a tablet should be like. I say tiny because they lack the vision (and the funding) to do something really extraordinary. It takes visionaries to build entire markets out of nowhere.
One such visionary has definitely been Google. As an entity, it has really done a lot of things differently and has shown the world that an ethos built around simplicity and minimalism can really make a lot of business sense. But when the search engine giant started to diversify into hardware, it really was something to take a look at. They are still getting there actually, as they are expected to release the first ever Google branded hardware tomorrow (the 5th) at the Android conference at Mountain View. Yes, I am talking about the Nexus One. But I am more excited about another piece of news that has not attracted as much attention as it probably should’ve.

Even if if the Apple Tablet/iSlate does not get released, this year is gearing up to be the year of the tablet. With many tablets about to be released this year and many more simmering in labs all around the globe — we are going to see a deluge of touchy-feely devices this year. Here’s a list of the things that you can expect this year. Most of them are new entrants or little-known companies but some of the devices are pretty attractive.
Do remember that these are first generation devices, so the core design philosophy is what actually counts here. Get over to other side for the whole list.

Apple is probably one of most watched companies in the current tech industry. After taking the mobile phone industry completely by storm and making another iTunes (Music) Store success story out of it, the bystanders and the competitors have become wiser now — Apple is definitely up to something. A lot of things in fact, if all the rumors are to be believed. But since they can’t all be believed, here’s your distilled dose of what 2010 is expected to be like for Apple.
Apple’s secrecy is legendary by now. They are so good that other companies should probably learn from them. Thanks to this obsessive need for secrecy, we hardly know anything about what Apple has got cooking in their labs. So we subsist on sifting through rumors. This of course generates unimaginable hype for Apple but they are a company that has perfected the art of under-promising and over-delivering. From profit projections to devices, they do it every time. So we are always in a dilemma about how much to stretch our imagination.
I will try to keep mine on a tight leash for the following list and give you the things that I think Apple is really about to do.

Tablets are fast becoming the center of what promises to be a very exciting industry in the near future. It seems as if companies have suddenly realized that physical controls are passé and that the new coolness lies in how much specs you can cram into a thing that looks like a futuristic picture frame.
In fact, some think that slates need not be as big as standard picture frames. It can be simple and small, around 7 inches diagonal but it needs to be thin – around 0.5”. These are opinions that I have noticed being posted on forums, comments and also on personal blogs. So what attracts the techie and the non-techie alike to this new-age piece of future-tech?
The allure of finally having a sleek little device that has all the goodness of full touchscreen smartphones with a faster processor and a much larger screen. They also hope for innovative software that will make their experience go from good to mind bogglingly great. While innovation does not come that easily, a new crop of tablets seem to be taking up the challenge to meet these demands.
But do I detect a bit of paranoia mixed with fear and anticipation in this newly developing industry? Could it be that the rumors of an approaching Apple Tablet has companies hastening up their development cycles in order to launch the industrial equivalent of a preemptive strike?
