Yes it is a run for the acquisition these days for the two big Giants of the tech world — Google and Apple. Both of a lot of great ideas and they both lack the patience and the opportunity to sit down and develop on those ideas. So what they lack in time and resources, they make up in strategic acquisitions. This is not really a new practice in the business world but it is exciting to see how these two companies are thinking regarding their own and the industry’s future through these acquisitions, some of which can be very telling. This time, we talk about Google and their acquisition of ‘BumpTop Computers’.

There’s a time for action and there’s a time for selling your company to the highest bidder. For Palm, both those times have come an gone. They have had there chance and they did something nice — WebOS — but they didn’t quite get everything right. They made the fatal mistake of underestimating that market and hence, they got to where they are now – they have recently been acquired by HP. Rumors suggested this for a long time and there was also rumor that Asus and Dell tried to pitch in but didn’t quite make it.

This had to happen at some point and it has happened. Google is hell-bent on moving everything we do to the cloud and hence they have acquired Picnik. Picnik is something that I have sometimes used to quickly edit pics for using on my posts instead of firing up PhotoShop. That one’s a resource hog. So what does Google intend to do with it? Do you even need to be told?

It’s either that or Amazon is trying to divert our attention with an orchestrated hype generating move so that they can quietly work on their world domination plans in the background. Although not as exciting as an evil corporation bent on world domination, we will go with the Kindle supposition. So Amazon has been beefing up its arsenal in order to better compete with Apple’s threat. I can just imagine their emergency board meeting — “We have to do something. Let’s buy a touch company and get a good Manager with a great track record. Forget the cost, we are sinking here!”.
