Viliv has been one of those companies who have been consistently bringing out tablet devices. Sadly, they have also been a company who have been consistently bringing out mostly mediocre tablet devices to the market. They have been pretty dedicated to the cause since much before this whole tablet craze hit but their products have failed to inspire much excitement in consumers. But just like with smartphone makers, that is set to change now that they are using Android. And the Viliv X10 might be their best work so far.

Viliv is not a company that makes terrible hardware and then tries to pass it off with some spit shine. They have actually been making really good hardware. It’s just that their own homegrown software solution was far from exciting. It was clunky and severely lacking in finesse and usability. Their hardware had a lot of promise but their platform was dragging them down. Much like what was happening to Motorola, LG and Samsung.

And then Android happened and now we have a lot of really promising tablet devices that have good hardware and run Android. Viliv has been showing off their Viliv X10 Android-based tablet and so far it looks like everything you can want from your tablet device.

This is a 10 inch device and hence it competes directly with Apple’s iPad but in a lot of areas it seems to be better than the iPad. Starting with the resolution — the X10 has a resolution of 1366×768 pixels — that is more than the 1024×768 that we find on the iPad. Also, that is more than the 720p standard and hence it will give you a good video performance.

The folks over at Laptopmag.com went hands on with the X10 and came away throughly impressed. According to their experience, the glossy screen of the X10 reproduces color brilliantly. The video that they watched (a movie trailer) was apparently very vivid and enjoyable. According to Viliv, the tablet will be able to handle 1080p HD video with ease. All of his means one very important thing — the video playback on the X10 is actually going to be better than the iPad.

Moving on, they tried out the gaming. The X10 is shown to be powerful enough to be able to run a 3D racing game at fullscreen. The report exclaimed that that the finer details inside the game, like shadows and textures, were really well rendered and made the experience immersive. The racing game was controlled by the  device’s built in accelerometer, which is a common thing nowadays.

The Viliv X10 is also stuffed with options for expansion with SD card and USB ports. On the connectivity front, we have WiFi, 3G and even WiMAX, making it one potent device. There’s also HDMI out, thus enabling you to share your joy with others or just to play your games on a large screen.

The device is ARM-based and is currently running on Android 2.1 but Viliv says that it will be running FroYo (Android 2.2) by the time it goes up for sale. That will add another major feature to the roster — Flash support — along with WiFi hotspot and blazing fast speeds. This could be a really sweet deal if they can price it right. We’ll be watching.
