To overcome the problems associated with flash cards and hard drives that were originally designed for personal computer applications and consumer electronics, a breakthrough in advanced storage technology has been engineered with the so called Silicon Drives. Silicon Drive III represents the industry’s very first advanced storage technology. It also comes with integrated PowerArmor and SiSMART technologies. The technology involved has been field proven in thousands of customer applications so far.
In March 2009 WD acquired Silicon systems and began shipping its new silicon drive III SSD product family which was actually based on technology developed by Silicon systems. These Silicon Drives are perfect replacement for hard drives used in data processing centers, blade servers and also in industrial and embedded systems apart from places where forward looking and high performance, reliable storage solutions are required. The other features like high transfer rates and capacities of Silicon Drive III enable operation for new multimedia applications involving high data volumes. Also due to the high reliability and the long lifetime of Silicon Drive III flash storage solutions, digital streaming applications like Video on Demand or VOD, Internet Protocol Television or IPTV and digital monitoring, control systems have been able to benefit a lot.
The speed of data travelers are increasing day by day and Silicon drive III is not an exception. In comparison to its predecessor Silicon Drive II, the Silicon Drive III comes with the data transfer speed at rates which have increased by 3 to 4 times. In terms of capacity the Silicon Drive III SSD comes with a 2.5’ form factor and is available in capacities of 30 GB, 60 GB, 90 GB and 120 GB. In the 1.8’ form factor it comes in capacities of 30 GB and 60 GB. The available SSD models for Silicon Drive III 2.5’ drives from 30GB to 120 GB include PATA (ATA6/Ultra100) and SATA with (3GB/s) interface.
The Silicon Drive III has been specifically designed and optimized for applications where high performance and reliability is the need during demanding 24X7 embedded system, media appliance and data streaming market applications. The integration of company’s patented and some patent pending advanced storage technologies in every Silicon Drive III product ensures high performance and greater reliability is achieved. To add to these, the technologies like PowerArmor, SiSMART, SolidStor help address OEM design considerations which are critical like elimination of drive corruption due to power anomalies, monitoring Silicon Drive’s useable life in real time and other integrated advanced storage technologies which ensures integrity of data and SSD life for multiple year product deployments.
In all the product highlights include: availability from Q2 of 2009, 100/80 Mega Bytes Read/Write transfer rates, PATA (ATA6/Ultra100) and SATA (SGB/s) interface, SSD form factors 1.8’ and 2.5’, high capacities, RoHS 6/6 compliance, a durable SLC-NAND flash technology along with Patented wear leveling, PowerArmor and SiSMART for longer operating time and eliminating drive corruption.
In the end, we can say Silicon Drive III is an efficient and complete solution for data storage problems.
