Intel’ Hexacore 3.2GHz Core i7-970 Is Real, Shipping Now

Looks like the rumors that were circulating in the market about a more affordable version of the monstrous Gulftowm 32nm-based Core-i7-980x from Intel, were real after all. Even though there hasn’t been an official announcement for the product, The chip is currently shipping from online stores. It is also available for people living in the UK to order but it will depend on whether their local stores have received stocks or not.
Intel’s Gulftown processors are hexa-core speed-chips that were first heard about some time late last year when they were supposed to come to Apple’s Mac Pro towers. They were finally released earlier this year as the Intel core i7-980x Extreme Edition, smashing rumors of them being named Core i9. Also starting speculations about what Core i9 might be reserved for.
The newly shipping Core i7-980x are cheaper than its Gulftown brother at USD900. They come at a standard 3.2GHz but it is possible that Intel’s Turbo Boost utility might be able to crank them up a bit higher just like the Core i7-980x. It has a healthy 12MB on-chip memory cache and a standard triple-channel DDr3 memory controller — giving you a chance to install a lot of memory.
The only problem here is that Intel hasn’t put out any official word about this new release, even though it has shown on multiple places. But this looks more like a release than an accidental release by a third-party seller, which is curiously prone to happen to unreleased gadgets. Mainly smartphones. But this does not seem to be the case here. So if you are within the blessed areas where the chip has been released – run to your hardware vendor and start bugging him right now.

Intel hat seinen Core i7-970 Hexacore Prozessor auf die Menschheit los gelassen. Intel hat mal wieder an der Geschwindigkeitsschraube gedreht und den seit dem Frühjahr angekündigten Core i7-970 mit sechs Prozessorkernen in den USA veröffentlicht. Auch wenn die meisten User ihre Vierkern-CPU nicht mal ansatzweise auslasten, kommt also ein weiterer Schub in Sachen Speed. Die in 32mn gebauten Prozessoren werden weiterhin der Core i-Serie zugeordnet, was Laien, die sich mit der Namensgebung von Intel nicht so gut auskennen, hier und da verwirren dürfte. Bisher gab es den Core i7-980x, einen auf 3,33 GHz getakteten Sechskerner, der in den Preislisten immer noch mit 1000 Dollar angegeben wird. Der neue i7-970 hat “nur” 3,2 GHz Takt, verfügt aber ansonsten über den gleichen 12 MB L3 Cache und die, laut Intel, maximal auf 1.066 MHz getakteten DDR3-RAM-Speicherinterfaces. Allerdings ist es schon etlichen Bastlern gelungen, da auch mehr als 2000 MHz rauszuholen. Laut der Preisliste soll der 970er immer noch 885 Dollar kosten (Bei Abnahme von 1000 Stück). Das ist dann immer noch etwas sehr viel Geld für eine CPU, die man (noch) eher selten komplett ausnutzen kann. Man darf auch nicht vergessen, dass es sehr viele Anwendungen gibt, die nur einen Kern ansprechen und man statt 6 x 3.2 GHz halt nur 1 x 3.2 GHz aus seinem Rechner rausholen kann. Auch die 130 Watt Strom, die die CPU unter Volllast verbraucht, sind ein Argument, noch etwas mit dem Kauf zu warten. Via Otaku. Infos auch in Intel Pressroom. Dieser Text ist mir was wert:
