remote control without batteries

A first prototype of a remote control that does not need batteries to function was showcased by NEC Electronic and Soundpower at the Embedded Technology conference and trade show in Japan. The somewhat rough translation of the Japanese press release outlines the use of Piezoelectricity to generate an electronic potential by mechanical stress. The translated documents calls it “vibration power generation” and combines Piezoelectricity with the power control techniques.

The first prototype that was showcased at the trade show in Japan was a bulky five button remote control that did not need batteries or another power source to function. First retail products for the consumer market are expected to launch in 2011.
