Next-Gen iPhone Might Have Flash, RFID, OLED Screen, Dual-Core Processor

Okay, so Korea Times is claiming that  Apple will soon release a Dual-Core iPhone that will eat your phone for breakfast. Okay, so they didn’t write that part about breakfast but if the rumor is true then it will do so anyway. According to the paper, KT, the carrier who’s got the exclusive on the iPhone in Korea, has leaked this bit of information. According to Korea Times’ sources inside KT, the new 4th generation iPhones will arrive sometime in June and will be handed out to corporate executives to see how well they hold out in a demanding situation. They are calling it the litmus test for the phone.

But thinking about a dual-core processor powered iPhone is making me want to say “major pwnage!” to Google and the others. That’s because it is going to completely overpower the SnapDragon chip in a one-against-many combat. At the current moment, the only processor that can go this far is the Cortex-A9 that was showcased back in 2009 by ARM. There was a rumor earlier that the Cortex-A9 design has been licensed to Apple. And in any case, Apple has a star cast of engineers from its PA-Semi takeover to help it design such a chip for the iPhone, so this is entirely possible. The Cortex-A9 can theoretically go beyond 2GHz but I think Apple will save that for next year. But imagine a 1.5GHz dual-core processor powering the new iPhone. Ah the drool, ah the wetness… yes, enjoy that for a while.

The phone is also supposed to have advanced graphics, which is kinda given if they increase the processing power to that level. That means a superb new update to the iPod Touch if they continue pushing it as a fantastic platform for handheld gaming, which I am sure they will. Other than the processor news, there is also the claim about the new model sporting an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display. If that is true then all the talks of the iPhone’s screen being not as good as some of the others is going to fade away into the background.

The Fastest Android Phone At the moment

So let’s see here — now that the competition has (almost) caught up, it is time for Apple to catch up. And this they will do by — giving you face melting speed [check], better display [check], new interface (the iPhone OS 4.0) and may be even RFID. RFID will allow the user to swipe their phones instead of a credit card at terminals for making payments or for receiving information form a terminal. It works both ways. The only concern here is about the security of RFID, which has been questioned before. There’s also a mention of a removable battery but seeing as Apple has been doing away with that in both their phones and laptops, don’t hold your breath.

Overall, if Apple is to one-up the rest (as they need to by now), these are main areas where they can do it. There have also been reports of Apple purchasing large quantities of LED flash form the market. Plus, the new 64GB NAND chips from Toshiba might mean a humongous storage option on iPhones. With rumors spreading about a possible 27th Janurary 2010 event at the Yerba Buena, SF, to unveil the tablet and the new iPhone 4.0 SDK — it shouldn’t take us too long to get to know what’s going on. The new iPhones are expected to be on schedule around June.
