What do you get when you take a flash drive and stuff it into a super tough metal pipe? You get LaCie’s new XtremKey over the top protected rugged USB flash drive. And when I say over the top, I mean it in a run-a-10 ton-truck-over-it kinda way. You can literally run it over with a truck, freeze it, and boil it without damaging it and the data inside. Seems like LaCie is aiming for military-grade protection. Not that it already is not out there.

And you thought that the PC industry had one foot in the grave. Intel has just had the best quarter in the 42 years in which it has existed. They generated US$10.2 billion in revenue and they earned US$2.9 billion. If Intel is doing this well, I think we have reconsider our verdict about the PC industry dying and all.

Apple has released Safari 5. With this new version, Apple brings a lot of features that Mac users have been asking for since a long time. We finally get third-party extensions, open-to-tab and also get something called Safari Reader. The address field is now the smart address field. And all of it makes me think — these are the exact things I like about FireFox. Nonetheless, having them on Safari means that the Apple browser is ready to go mainstream. Google has decided that it will no longer use Windows-based machines for its operations. Hence, it has begun a purge of everything Windows and the sound of hearts breaking is echoing a long way from Redmond. Google has stated that this decision is based on low security level that such a mass market operating inevitably ends up suffering form. Despite the ongoing feud with Apple, Google has named Mac as one of the replacement platforms. The other is of course Linux, which they have been using for quite some time now.

Steve Jobs appeared on News Corp’s D8 conference and answered surprisingly probing questions with relative openness. He talked about burning issues such as flash, app approval, Google’s competition, Siri acquisition, the whole iPhone at the bar incident, AT&T and more. If that topic list doesn’t tell you already, this interview of Steve is definitely one of the most revealing ones of recent times.

As if banning Flash on the iPhone was not enough, Apple is now working on a Flash alternative that will allow rich web applications to be built. Apple’s alternative is called Gianduia. The name is from an Italian hazelnut chocolate. The connection? Gianduia is basically a combination of browser-side Cocoa with CoreData along with WebObjects and JavaScript. At least that is is how one developer described it in his tweet.

Okay, so it is not like Google has become self aware (yet) and seized all the leading research in bionic machinery but if it did, this new Bionic arm would look like a pretty tasty piece of technology to acquire. This is an advanced version of Touch Bionic’s i-Limb prosthetic hand and it has some very special features to set itself apart from the previous generation. For one thing, it can lift 200 pounds, if that is what it take to tickle your fancy.
