The announcement that we had all been waiting for has finally been made. Apple has released their tablet device and they call it iPad. Now before you start complaining about the many things it does not have, I want to tell you that what it has is perfect for what it is meant to do. This is not going to replace your MacBook or your Alienware, obviously! But it will replace your Kindle, your netbook, even your digital photo frame. The actual fact here is that no matter what you feel now, you will think differently once you get to touch it. This is the kind of device that look great now and will look revolutionary in a few years. What you have seen is just beginning.

Amazon has been on the crosshairs of multiple companies ever since the Kindle became such a hit. But such a hit I mean it is a popular niche device that will probably never see the kind of mass success that devices like the iPhone enjoy. Yes, you know where I am going with this — Amazon is scared of Apple. They are scared of Apple’s Tablet might mean for them — the large tree in a field of little e-reader shrubs.

Apple is about to announce something major on Wednesday next week. It will be their “latest creation”. It will be something we have never seen before. And well all know by now that it is going to be the long rumored slate/tablet device from Apple. We don’t know too much about it. It is has been as well kept a secret as the Nexus One has been a badly kept one. But above all the questions about how powerful it is, what the UI is, lies the basic question — what the hell does it look like?

Looks like Asus’ “quick, make something like that!” development cycle has borne fruit again. Behold Asus’ entry into the brave old world print media with two new eBook Readers – the DR-570 and DR-950. The DR-570 is a 6inch device while the DR-970 is a 9inch device. So the question is why they are not called Dr-500 and DR-900. Nevermind. So it seems like Asus is suddenly very forthcoming about their eBook readers. Last time they were asked, they were really reluctant to say anything beyond a vague acknowledgement.

iRiver is a company that is known for their well-designed PMPs that also sound pretty good. Despite of that, I would say that they haven’t always been great a riding the first wave of the latest trends as they hit. But now, with their K1 SmartHD PMP, they might be riding two waves at once. One is obviously HD — the world of gadgets is hi-def. If they can’t show it on their tiny screens, they will still render it for your HDTV via HDMI. The other is, for PMPs, support for the Matroska or the MKV format as it is popularly referred.
